  • elheber started the topic The Anatomy of a Professional Game Review in the forum Writers Block 8 years, 8 months ago

I decided to go over several reviews from huge gaming publications to see what elements they all share. I looked at The Last Guardian reviews from GameSpot, IGN, The Jimquisition, Destructoid, Game Informer and Eurogamer. I scrutinized their structure, their style of writing and even their grading format. Join me as I lay out what I found:

Well, reviews at the end of the day are just the opinion of one person regarding one game. If a review becomes a critique, it has to be placed under the microscope a bit more, like seeing where it fits into the grand scheme of the greater world of media. In short, reviews are both opinion and buyers guides for the most part. Critique is examining…[Read more]

I like to edit mine several times as well. Some of my reviews take me 3-5 hours and have up to 6 edits.

In relation to the NMS comment, I think once you completed a game, just describe how you feel about the game at that time. We can always post an update later if something changes.

I can check and see if revisions are enabled. Might have a copy from before the edit that we can mod to bring it back.

If I had written a review for No Man’s Sky, I’m 95% sure I would have gotten it wrong. Although I was enjoying my time with the game, I was completely unaware of the false expectations that had surrounded it. So even though giving a general idea of how much fun I had with the game would be honest, it wouldn’t necessarily be true for many…[Read more]

I thought it was the right decision and I would do it again.

…at least until you mentioned a special spoiler notice HOLY SHIT why didn’t I think about that? I’m kicking myself for not having thought of that at the time.

  • xsuicidesn0wmanx replied to the topic How does everyone write their reviews? in the forum Writers Block 8 years, 8 months ago

I don’t think I necessarily get this right all the time, but the most important thing I want to do is give a general idea of how much fun I had with a game. While also sprinkling in a few details here and there.

This is really hard though. I’m still trying to figure out my writing style. I don’t feel like my personality comes through in my…[Read more]

I think if we were to run into this same situation again, adding a small notice that there may be a minor spoiler would be acceptable. I don’t disagree with your point at all. Hell I actually consider it to be 100% deceptive marketing. And I would even go as far as saying this subject is worthy of its own article.

Honestly, I made the wrong…[Read more]

Mankind divided would have made it up to the top  had it not been for the week main had it not been for the weak main storyline.

  • Joel Castro replied to the topic How does everyone write their reviews? in the forum Writers Block 8 years, 8 months ago

I always try to avoid spoilers too. Though I try to do the experiential side, its easier for me to do step by step. Maybe if I do videos next year it’ll be different

It’s been a… challenging gaming season for me. The game I’ve spent the most time on this year is a mobile game from 2014 (?) when on the toilet.

Deus Ex: Mankind Divided wins top honors for me. The game was right in my wheelhouse. No, not only was it in my wheelhouse… it pointed a gun at my head and said, “look at me. I am de captain.”

  • elheber replied to the topic How does everyone write their reviews? in the forum Writers Block 8 years, 8 months ago

At first, I kept a notebook next to me and wrote down things that stood out to me as I played. Later, I found this part to be completely unnecessary for my writing style. It made me write too wordy and include too many things which, in the long run, weren’t all that important to the overall experience.

As I play the game, I try to figure out…[Read more]

SPOILER NOTE: I will be discussing the premises of Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and linking to an article that discusses potential spoilers for Passengers and Collateral Beauty.

You guys ‘member Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End and how the marketing for the game focused on the “will they/won’t they die“ aspect? I made a revie…[Read more]

surprisingly, I haven’t played many strategy games. Don’t really have a good enough computer to run anything worthwhile except for retro pixel stuff.

thanks! Also, is there any easier way to get to older articles and reviews on here then going into dashboard? I couldn’t find my TW review without going into dashboard and pulling up my review history to get the permalink. Sorry if I’m being dense!

Ah hah, a Warhammer fan. Any plans on trying out Vermintide? I believe that’s a Warhammer game right?

Reply button should work now, Flag will be added in the future along with the other 5 icons/buttons I mentioned in my email response to you.

wait, WTF’s wrong with me – Total War: Warhammer! I forgot when it released :-P

Great game for strategy and Warhammer fans. Very questionable DLC model (unsurprisingly), but I gave it a great review and stand by it

  • Rex ranae replied to the topic Everyone's GOTY picks, now that it's (almost) over in the forum Shooting the Shit 8 years, 8 months ago

    I’ve played so little :-(

I’d go with Doom, Abzu, and UC4. These are almost by default, given how little of the 2016 content I’ve played… but they are all deserving of recognition, so I’ll run with it :-)

  • xsuicidesn0wmanx replied to the topic Everyone's GOTY picks, now that it's (almost) over in the forum Shooting the Shit 8 years, 8 months ago

Thinking about this has me wondering… Why do we have to limit the GOTY to one game? Lets just say “Games” of the Year and leave it as ‘these are the games we think everyone should try’.

Just from your list alone, I haven’t finished the Infinite Warfare campaign yet, nor started TitanFall 2’s. I’ve also not yet played FFXV, Doom, Dark Souls 3…[Read more]
