No that was not a typo, the retail version of the Oculus Rift will set you back just shy of $600.
For years the developers behind the Oculus Rift have teased us with the possibilities of a viable Virtual Reality headset that could deliver where so many others have failed. And today you can pre-order your own Oculus Rift headset, complete with an Xbox One controller, the Oculus Remote, the Oculus VR Sensor, and the game Lucky’s Tale for a mere $599.99. No, that is not a misprint, Oculus actually expects you to pay $600 for their headset. If that wasn’t enough, there is a fairly good chance you will have to upgrade your PC to run the device, which requires 4 USB ports, an NVIDIA GTX 970 / AMD R9 290 equivalent or greater, an Intel i5-4590 CPU equivalent or greater, 8GB+ of memory, and an HDMI 1.3 video output.
If the cost of the device is not a deterrent for you, there is some good news. Not only will you not be charged for the device until they actually ship it, you will also receive a free copy of EVE: Valkyrie, and have a place in line for the Oculus Touch controllers reserved once they are ready for production. In addition, Oculus is working with some of the major computer companies like Dell, Alienware, and Asus on ‘Oculus Ready’ computers that are specifically designed to work out of the box with the Oculus Rift headset, starting at $950, plus $600 more for the headset. Oculus posted to their blog that some of the “Oculus Ready” PCs will open for pre-order in February, starting with a $1500 bundle that also includes the Oculus Rift headset. If your preorder a headset before that date, you can still buy an Oculus Ready PC at that price and your Oculus Rift ship date will not change.
While my initial excitement for VR has been tempered, I am still eager to see how the virtual reality landscape shapes out over the course of 2016, with entries from HTC/Valve and Sonys Playstation brand also due out later this year. Surely I will buy at least one of these devices, but for now at least, I will wait to see how much the offerings from Valve and Sony will cost. What are your plans?
