It’s going to be a busy year for Nintendo.

In a report earlier today, Nomura Securities issued a statement that they believe Nintendos newest home gaming console, currently named the Nintendo NX, will cannibalize sales of both the Nintendo 3ds handheld and Nintendo Wii U home console. According to analyst Junko Yamamura, the Nintendo NX will be available for sale during the holiday shopping season in 2016. Nomura Securities believes that Nintendo is planning to explain the concept behind the NX this spring(between March and May), and show off the final hardware at E3 2016 in June, with the launch in either October or November. Nomura said “We think the NX will start to boost operating profits in 18/3, when it will have been on the market for a full year and will have a line-up of software titles, which carry high operating margins.”

In relation to current sales trends regarding Nintendos current gaming platforms, Nomura said ‘We had previously thought that the NX launch would have only a limited impact on 3DS and Wii U sales as it is not being positioned as a successor to either console, but we have now altered our view because 3DS sales have been weakening a little recently, particularly in terms of software, as the machine enters its sixth year, and to factor in a harsher competitive climate and what happened to other existing consoles when new machines were launched in the past. We still expect the NX to launch in 17/3. We have lowered our estimates for current consoles to reflect the present situation, fiercer competition, and what has happened in the past when new hardware is announced…

Currently Nintendo is sitting in a distant 3rd place to the Sony Playstation 4 and Microsoft Xbox One. But after taking the top spot the previous generation(Wii, PS3, Xbox 360), Nintendo is sure to have learned from both the success of the Wii, and the failures of the Wii U. With arguably their biggest game to date, the newest Zelda, set to arrive along side the NX during late 2016, expectations are high at Nintendo.
