GameTrailers, a reputable video game news publication that has existed since 2002, announced via Twitter that it’s shutting down for good. Editor-in-Chief and Co-Founder Brandon Jones confirmed the news.
The announcement came without warning to the public and for some of the staff as well. Associate Editor Ben Moore said via NeoGAF, “everyone is being let go. We all found out mere hours ago, so we’re still reeling a bit.”
Defy Media acquired GameTrailers from Spike Digital Entertainment during E3 2012 and laid off about two thirds of the staff. Under Defy Media, GameTrailers focused more on showcasing the personalities behind the content more than the content itself.
Shows like The Final Bosman, Huber Hype, Mandatory Update, their podcast GT Time, and their Twitch stream GT Live, placed the staffers in front of the camera; this, in turn, allowed the audience to get a feel for the people behind the reviews. It was well known, for example, that Editorial Producer Michael Huber had been waiting with bated breath for Shenmue 3 so much, which made it all the more special to see him reacting live to the game’s announcement.
Often, Video Editor and host of Mandatory Update Ian Hinck, would be arguing on-camera with Brandon Jones that PS4 exclusive Bloodborne should have gotten a perfect score of 10, whereas GT has famously never given a perfect score to any game. After the closure of GameTrailers was announced, their YouTube channel posted a “fixed” review for Bloodborne by Hinck which finally gave it a perfect score.
Best of luck to all the people of GameTrailers.
