The Division 2 Ditches Steam

Game to be sold on Uplay and Epic Games Store Instead

In an unexpected move by Ubisoft, Tom Clancy’s The Division 2 won’t be sold via PC gaming’s largest storefront – Steam.

Instead, the game development giant has struck a deal with Epic Games, allowing them to retail the upcoming sequel on their storefront; the Epic Games Store. The Division 2 will be joining the Steam skippers club, which includes the likes of Satisfactory, Man Eater, Hades and Gorgoa. There’s been a recent surge of games avoiding the platform, which has dominated digital game sales for almost 16 years. Of course, Epic Games wants to change this, announcing the Epic Games Store during The Game Awards last December. Their gimmick was a free game every fortnight, starting with the deep dive exploration em up Subnautica, followed by Super Meat Boy and (tomorrow) What Remains of Edith Finch.

The Division 2 is the sequel to the post apocalyptic New York RPG (which is available on Steam). This time, agents are heading to the country’s capital; Washington D.C. Players can expect to form squads and descend into the capital to save what’s left of society. Check out the latest trailer below:

Epic Games are seemingly waging a war against Steam, attempting to sway players to ditch the platform in favor of their storefront. Developers too are assisting the cause as they are irked with the way Steam handles revenue cuts. Currently, Valve takes a 30% cut from every game sold whereas Epic Games takes a mere 12%. Publisher Activision has also moved away from Steam, with both Destiny 2 and Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 being exclusive to the Battle.net launcher. Steam, however, seems unphased by the deserters and still has a strong userbase, with a 24 hour peak of 14 million users at the time of writing. Furthermore, Steam was estimated to have made a whopping $4.3 billion in 2017.

Tom Clancy’s The Division 2 is out March 15th.
