signs of things to come?

Borderlands 2 on the Switch just received an update, adding in DLC that was missing at launch.

Originally launched in July last year, Commander Lilith and the Fight for Sanctuary was released as a surprise for Borderlands fans. It told the story of how Sanctuary perished and patched some holes in the story, as well as addressing changes to the story that were made via Tales From the Borderlands.

For a small DLC (that was free for the first few weeks of its release), it was unexpectedly substantial and provided something to play while fans waited for Borderlands 3 that November. In May of this year Borderlands, Borderlands 2 and Borderlands: The Pre-sequel hit the Switch along with the Bioshock franchise and XCOM 2. This was the work of ports done by various companies which saw 2K establish a part of their library on Nintendo’s hybrid console.

Borderlands was sold in a bundle called the legendary collection (with the option to buy Borderlands 1 separately and 2 + The Pre-sequel in a bundle), boasting all the DLC for the three games, except for the Commander Lilith DLC.

Fans at the time put it down to the fact that Borderlands 3 isn’t on the Switch, but surprisingly the DLC was added in with an update that came into effect earlier this week that added an FOV slider, a much requested feature. The update is free and affects just Borderlands 2.

The addition of the DLC could hint at future plans for Borderlands 3 on the Switch. Recently, cloud gaming was introduced to the west which has seen Control playable on the console, providing you have a stable internet connection. Hitman 3 is due to also appear on the console through this service.

Could Borderlands 3 be available on the Switch via cloud streaming? It’s not entirely out of the question, and may explain why they added the DLC.

Alternatively, they could hire Fractured Bytes or another company to do a port, but this would require major technical concessions and months of work. That being said, Saber Interactive managed to The Witcher 3 running on the system.
