Orcs Must Die! Unchained and Hero Academy Servers to Close

Robot Entertainment have announced that the servers for Orcs Must Die! Unchained, Hero Academy and Hero Academy 2 will be closing down due to costs. As a result, all three games have been pulled from the store.

In an apology post, CEO of Robot Entertainment Patrick Hudson addressed the matter:

“Making and supporting a game is a long and challenging journey. Along the way, there are plenty of highs and plenty of lows. The communities who play our games join us on these journeys. We know this decision affects our players as much as it does us.

We’ve kept these games operating at a financial loss for many months. Unfortunately, it’s no longer sustainable for us to do so. We must shift our focus to future games and make our investments there.”

While this may sound concerning to fans of the studio, Robot Entertainment are steadily making progress on their two unannounced projects which are expected to be announced this year.

Orcs Must Die! Unchained was created with the idea of taking the classic Orcs Must Die experience and sprinkling it with all the workings of an MMO. Unfortunately, the game failed to draw players in and, as a result, will not be celebrating its second birthday.

Hero Academy was a different story; the game has been around since 2012 (with a sequel released in early 2018) though the game never found a foothold on Steam. Despite this, Robot kept the servers open.

Servers for all three games will remain open until April 8th 10AM UTC. Players who log in before the shut down will receive free currency – both premium and standard – over the next few months before the servers are terminated and all progress will be erased. Unfortunately, players looking to dive into the game before its closure will be sorely disappointed as all three titles have been removed from the Steam storefront. Attempting to download Orcs Must Die! Unchained on the PlayStation store will lead you to a dead link.

In a closing statement, Hudson thanked fans for playing their titles. “We’ve loved interacting with you in game, on our forums, and at places like PAX. We hope you give us the opportunity to join you again in our future games.”
