New Store set to rival steam
Epic Games have revealed their latest project, the Epic Games store – a storefront set to rival digital game retailing giant Steam.
The store, which went live during the Game Awards on Friday boasts a collection of titles from various publishers including the newly released Ashen (which is yet to be released on Steam). The store includes some new titles including Rebel Galaxy Outlaw and Man Eater while featuring some golden oldies such as Journey and Subnautica.
While the majority of the 17 games are yet to be released, you can buy the likes of Hades and Ashen right now. To woo players into using the marketplace, Epic have announced that every fortnight a game will be free, starting with Subnautica next Friday with the original Super Meat Boy being the second title on the 28th.
Many have been questioning whether or not the Epic Games Store could be a serious competitor for the dominant PC marketplace. Currently, that title is held by Valve’s Steam storefront, which has been a prominent part of PC gaming culture since the early 2000s. Epic’s plan to achieve the takeover is by giving developers an 88% cut of profits, contrast to the 70% by Valve.
Epic Games have been increasing in popularity ever since the release of the battle royale segment of their game Fortnite in September 2017. The game (and its emotes) have taken the world by storm, seeing Fortnite become one of the biggest games of 2018, drumming up $318 million in May 2018 alone for the North Carolina based studio.
Now with a successful free to play title, a widely used game engine and a pocket full of cash, Epic Games could have a chance at becoming the next big game retailer.
