The Witcher Trials: Thronebreaker is Not the Witcher One Might Expect

Picture the Witcher with extra Gwent

After playing The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, many thought the game series was pretty much over. Netflix making a series would be all fans would have to look forward to, but a new Witcher game is in the works at CD Projekt Red. It is not The Witcher 4. I cannot stress that enough. It is called The Witcher Tales: Thronebreaker and it is NOT The Witcher 4.

The reason I keep saying that (and will continue to do so) is that when I heard there was another Witcher game, I got incredibly excited. I then looked into what it actually was and got disappointed. This is going to be a card game. It is Gwent with a story. If you like Gwent, that’s probably interesting. If you are like me and just played a little here there when the mood struck, then this is not for you.
Obviously, CDPR is busy at the moment with a game called Cyberpunk 2077 (perhaps you’ve heard of it). We all want that game to be the best that it can be, and so I understand not really worrying about the Witcher universe right now.

What I didn’t like is that when it was revealed on The Witcher Twitter account it said “A new adventure set in the world of The Witcher awaits!” There is no tweet that tells or shows you what the game actually is. When you think of this game series you get a few ideas in your head in terms of gameplay and graphics. This just isn’t what most would expect. In other words, it is not The Witcher 4.
That isn’t to say that the game will be bad or not have a Witcher feel to it. There are going to be a ton of choices to be made and they will change the ending of the game. There will also be a lot of side quests to get distracted by and characters to meet. Some we may know from the games, but no promises have been made. Geralt has been used in some of the promotional trailers though, so fingers crossed.

What this means in terms of gameplay is basically this. You play as Queen Meve in a cartoony world. Instead of battling enemies in the Geralt fashion of swinging a sword, dodging, and using signs, you play a game of Gwent. A bit less exciting in my opinion. But there will still be a lot of exploring to do. In fact, many, if not all, are places that have yet to be seen in the games. For example, Rivia, Angren, Mahakam, and Lyria, to name but a few.

The exciting part is that there is a new story set in The Witcher universe. It’s just if you don’t really care about Gwent, that excitement goes away. I don’t doubt that the story will be amazing and that might be enough to pull the people like me through to the end. If you play on PC, the game will be available on October 23rd. For those on Xbox One or PlayStation 4, you can play on December 4th.
