Base model PS4 gets its first HDR game…

In a forum post, the Eidos Montreal CM released patch notes for their recent title – Deus Ex: Mankind Divided – in which they detailed various bug fixes and the addition of PS4 Pro optimized rendering (in advance of the upgraded system’s November release). Of note, the patch also introduces High Dynamic Range (HDR) support for the base model PS4 and Xbox 1S.

This is a significant moment of sorts for the base PS4, because this represents the first title to support HDR on the system. HDR is traditionally associated with 4K content because the technology has only made its way to consumers through high-end 4K television sets. However, Sony recently released a firmware update introducing HDR support for all of their PS4 branded devices – despite the base model PS4 not supporting 4K gaming. This left some heads scratching, because the base PS4 lacks HDMI 2.0a specification, and to my knowledge Sony has not yet officially commented on how this upgrade is possible. My own belief after perusing the various opinions about the upgrade on the web: the bandwidth of the PS4’s HDMI 1.4 controller is sufficient for HDR10 at 1080p. From there, the 4K TV set just needs to work its usual upscaling magic and voila – HDR on your 4K TV
