Rise of the Tomb Raider comes to PS4 in October

The game (originally a timed exclusive on Microsoft’s XBox platform, and then later released on PC in January of this year) has been widely lauded for its visuals, establishing a deeper emotional connection with Lara’s character, and a mixture of diverse combat and exploration-related mechanics. Some fans of the original Tomb Raider series (1996+), like myself, have reacted less favorably to the decreased emphasis on exploration and free-form platforming, as the design has made room for a more cinematic experience. Nevertheless, this latest entry is particularly strong, and PS4 fans will no-doubt enjoy being able to experience the game on their platform.

*UPDATE* Square Enix has confirmed this news, and added that the release will include PSVR support. In a “20 Year Celebration edition” of the game (marking the two decades since the series’ launch in 1996), Rise of the Tomb Raider will be bundled with the previously-released DLC, an art book, new DLC including outfits and weapons, an Endurance co-op gameplay mode (essentially a wilderness survival game challenge), and a new story chapter. The 20 Year Celebration content will be available to XBox and PC gamers as well (free through a Season Pass, or bundled with a release of the 20 Year Celebration edition on those platforms), although PSVR support will not (of course). Importantly, it appears that the PSVR support is only for the bonus story chapter, which will be disappointing for those hoping to experience the whole game with the increased immersion afforded by the technology.
