“Metal Gear Survive” Announced at Gamescom 2016

The first Metal Gear game after series director Hideo Kojima’s departure from Konami, Metal Gear Survive, was announced early this morning.

Survive takes place after the events of Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes as a group of MSF soldiers are sucked through a worm hole to an alternate timeline during the attack on the original Mother Base. The game will be co-op- centric, and its zombie-like enemies give off a Resident Evil/Left 4 Dead vibe.

Konami told Polygon that Survive will release in 2017 at a price comparable to Ground Zeroes, which came out at $30. Also worth noting is the emphasis on the “V” in Survive‘s title art, and the fact that it takes place in-between Ground Zeroes and The Phantom Pain. Those two games along with Metal Gear Online were umbrellaed under the “Metal Gear Solid V Experience”, so Survive could be an extension of that “experience”.

Perhaps this game could somehow be related to the definitive edition of Metal Gear Solid V which was found and then delisted on Amazon. Given, a leak suggests that this definitive edition will come out in October, which is before Survive‘s 2017 release window, but the two games could still be related.

Despite not yet showing any actual gameplay, Survive will have an uphill battle regardless of how the game shapes up in the coming months. If the harsh like/dislike ratio on the reveal trailer is any indication, fans are understandably hesitant to accept any Metal Gear game without Hideo Kojima involved, let alone one that comes off as a co-op zombie shooter.
