Level Select #5

We’ve made it to the fifth Level Select!

This is a short and sweet level, designed to test how fast you can outrun Bob-ombs.

It was nice to see a quality airship level (something I haven’t seen since playing the story mode) and a level that was well designed, not just in terms of enemy placement but the actual environment itself. The stretch to the end was nerve wracking and makes the level have the potential to be eligible for speedruns.

While a relatively simple level, Samuel can be quite fun to play through, especially for new players who want to test out two of the best power-ups in the game.

There’s also an element of parkour and good timing thrown in. While I enjoyed playing, it would have been nice to have an extension to the level. Either way, a fun level if you’re looking for something light and easy.

It’s not everyday you come across a level that openly let’s you reach the goal without any obstacles, so it’s rare to see Bowser’s Fiery Skies.

The whole level imagines a battle between you and Bowsers army (which includes recently added Koopalings) that takes place in the skies. It’s quite fun to try and take out each enemy, but it’s also quite fun to try and dodge them to get a record time on the goal.

If you’re into autoscrolling levels, this one is definitely a must play; level sees you fighting against a band of Koopas, fire bars and the constant slew of fire balls that destroy vital parts of the level.

This isn’t traditionally a hard level, but it does take patience and some cautious footing. With the absence of a mushroom, you’ve only got once chance to make it to the goal without getting hit.

I chose this level as my favourite of the week because it’s the one I enjoyed the most; something about the level design really got to me, and I ended up playing this level a couple of times to try and knock a few seconds off the clock.
