“Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2” Announced for Release in 2016

After a 24 hour countdown and a teaser site, Bandai Namco announced the sequel to 2015’s Dragon Ball Xenoverse earlier today.

The trailer promises that players will “protect the history of Dragon Ball”, including the past, present and “outcomes you wished were different”. On top of famous scenes from the the original four DBZ sagas, it also features moments from the two Dragon Ball Z TV specials, and two of the movies.

Characters highlighted in the trailer that weren’t playable in the previous Xenoverse are Freeza soldiers Dodoria and Zarbon, and movie villains Turles and Lord Slug. It’s a safe assumption that these characters will be playable in the final game.

Earlier shots in the trailer show a hub world populated with custom characters, similar to Toki Toki City in the original Xenoverse. It’s likely that Xenoverse 2 will have a similar plot involving time patrollers given the tagline “Fly Through Time”, and include an MMO-esque hub where players can party-up and trade.

Another speculation is that missions in Xenoverse 2 will include more non-cannon battles and characters, seeing as the teaser site had a gallery of images from many of the 15 Dragon Ball Z movies. It’s unclear whether or not the game will have any content from Dragon Ball Super, although one distant possibility could be a future DLC to tie-in with the currently unannounced English dub of Super, similar to how the last DLC of the original Xenoverse tied-in with the American theatrical release of Resurrection: F. But that’s quite a stretch.

Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 is scheduled to release sometime this year.
