Hi folks – I’ve been away a while because of an INSANE work life. Been doing a lot of flying, and then scrambling to make up work when I get home for a few days.
Anyway, I had some thoughts for a few articles to start working on, and thought I’d bounce them off you – mainly because they aren’t really “current events” topics
1) I’m finally getting around to playing Ni No Kuni, and am thinking of doing a review for it. One of the reasons I see value in this is the fact that there is a sequel coming out. I also don’t *love* it. I like it. But I think it gets held up way too high – so I think my perspective would at least be somewhat different from what we’ve all heard.
2) I’m thinking of a few even more “retro” pieces. One thing that could be fun, with the Switch out, is a review of the Sega Nomad – which is actually in many ways trying to do what the Switch does…; and then as a spin-off from that maybe it would be fun for me (or us in general) to kick up some perspectives on older games. Maybe ones you don’t hear much about but are worth a play (I’ve been thinking about Wetrix and Shadowrun [Genesis] as examples).
Thoughts? Anyone else interested in joining in on this? For the retro stuff, a fun labeling scheme might be something like “RETROspective: ~name of title/hardware~”

Yay, Sexy Rexy is back.
You’ll be happy to know that we do have plans to support retro gaming and it has always been a big part of my plans. Lately we have been trying to put more focus on creating features people will want to read that separate us from the run of the mill sites like GameSpot. I still want to have any modern gaming news as well, but less sterile than the other sites. We had planned on having a ‘throwback thursday’ article that tied into a YouTube series we intend on creating, potential titles could be ‘Retrospective, Retrograde, or Flashback’ though I’d be open to more suggestions as well. I also plan on building a collection tracker into the site for retro gamers to use to keep track of games they own. I like Retrograde the most, but not sure it sends the right message if taken literally. It’ll go nicely with our other article types we’re using. We’ve got the Rolling Reviews, Deconstructed Games, Backseat Gamer and Why I’m Breaking Up With You articles as well.
I was thinking these would be treated as news articles and that we would give these actual grades like A-F type of shit, or even use a 5 star system for the classic stuff. Still a bit fuzzy on how to handle it since the plan is to be a combined video and text article, I do also want retro games to have official reviews with an overall score. That said the secondary scores we use for modern games don’t really apply well to games from Gen 1-6. I guess that doesn’t matter much since secondary scores are not a requirement for a review. I think I can make it so reviews can be supported without any score needed. Shouldn’t be too hard to adjust.
We have a lot of plans here, but some things like retro gaming support just got pushed back so we could focus on finishing what is already built. I’ll see if I can get Killer to come up with a good static image for the retro reviews, a lot of those retro games don’t have 1920×1080 images so we’ll have to get creative.
If you have an idea for an article type, just write it, there isn’t any restriction on the content allowed here so long as it is about games and does not involve pornography.

Fuck yeah! Welcome back bro.
We’ve been setting some things up for these article types, should see a new Backseat Gamer from me shortly after the Xbox Scorpio reveal.
Also, congrats on surviving boot camp, no doubt that shit wasn’t easy. Glad you’re back!

It might be cool to try and do joint articles when it comes to some topics – i’m thinking almost like a transcript or “multiple takes on this news” type thing. I think it’s generally impractical for actual podcasts involving myself, but I could imagine some kind of textual form of that type of “real gamers’ dialogue”

Funny you say that Froggy, we’ve actually been thinking of doing that type of article in the near future. Part of why we’ve been looking at doing the podcast is because if you heard me and Killer1022 going back and forth about games you’d probably be rolling on your floor. Well, we’re not really ready to do a podcast just yet, but I was thinking it would be just as easy to record convos we have and create a transcript from them. Maybe add the audio but not video just yet.
In a way we do already do this, but getting participation from others has been rare. Our rolling reviews are meant to have multiple authors, but 90% of the content in those comes from me. We’ll be doing another one for Prey in 2 weeks but I’m betting it’ll be hard to get several people playing the game and writing about it at the same time.
